Expecting a baby this summer or fall? You’ve probably already discovered how difficult it can be to carry a child in the heat. If you’re having twins, it can be twice the trouble!
Here are some helpful tips for treating your feet this season from Dr. Jeffrey Wachtel, a foot care expert who’s worked with hundreds of expectant moms living near Lansdale.
First, keep your feet cool.
Step into a kiddie pool, a tub, a bucket, a public pool, a lake – whatever’s handy! Resting your feet in cool water seems to cool your entire body down and it naturally reduces swelling.
Put your feet up.
Resting your feet on a chair or a pile of pillows can feel great. Pillows under your feet while napping or sleeping can also help to ease swelling and give feet a much-needed break.
Treat yourself to a pedicure.
It doesn’t have to be a fancy one, especially if you’re not into bright nail polish. But having a professional trim your nails, gently buff away callouses and giving you a soothing massage can ease the discomforts of pregnancy. In fact, it might feel like a one-hour vacation!
Wear really good shoes.
Sure, it’s tempting to slip on flip-flops when your feet are changing size so quickly! But shoes that offer solid arch support are going to make a real difference in how your feet feel throughout the day. There are plenty of cute options that will give your feet the extra support they need so much during pregnancy.
Stay hydrated.
You already know how important it is to drink plenty of water during pregnancy, but it’s extra important when it comes to reducing swelling of the feet and ankles. Water flushes out toxins — and letting yourself get dehydrated will actually make your body work harder, which can lead tissues to retain even more water.
